Our biggest service event of the year, Literacy Alive!, is fast approaching and we still need volunteers! The event is on Wednesday, February 22nd from 12:45-3:15 at Forest View School and you will receive 3 service points for attending. If you have class, a note can be provided by Kristy for proof of commitment after you have talked to your professor. This note does not officially excuse you from class, but will let your professors know that you are volunteering at an official College of Education service event.
This is a huge event that is not only a lot of fun, but is great classroom experience! We will be working with grades K-3rd, including students in special education, to promote literacy as a fun experience. This year’s theme is being green. There will be a recycling relay, read alouds, and decorating their very own planter made out of recyclable materials!
Please sign up for this wonderful event by Saturday, February 18th so I can assign a group of members to each of the classrooms! Sign up here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xMXhacCvNpbvfu-F_9MMlVUAc88P04b18LvANVsOzoE/edit#gid=0.
There is also a prep night for the event on Saturday, February 19th from 7:00-8:30pm. We will be prepping materials, going over the schedule, and becoming familiar with the read aloud books. If you are planning on attending Literacy Alive!, it is highly recommended that you attend the prep night. If for some reason you are not able to, I will get the information to you another way. Sign up for prep night here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17vowzwVvqKTBnBNZz338WYqpVa0lDKI5Qxf56vduhVI/edit#gid=0.

Congratulations to our January Member of the Month, Brianna Ahrens!
Brianna is a Senior at MSU studying Elementary Education with a Language Arts concentration. Her favorite KDP has been volunteering at the East Lansing Public Library’s Homework Help Room because she loves “meeting new kids, and working with the same ones each week. It’s also a way for [her] to brush up on some of the skills [she hasn’t] used in a while.”
Brianna said that KDP has helped teach her “how to be a bigger part of [her] community, and new communication skills that will help make [her] a better educator.”
Congratulations again, Brianna, and thank you for your time and participation in KDP! To see past members of the month or to nominate someone for member of the month, please see the Member of the Month tab.
The KDP general member application is now open until March 17, 2017. Please fill out the form below to apply.
